CODING CORNER

Hundreds of changes to ICD-9 codes take effect Oct. 1

from the AAP Division of Health Care Finance and Quality Improvement

Oct. 1 brings about changes and updates for the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9) coding. This year, there are just over 310 new, 45 revised and 22 deleted codes. Specific areas of note for pediatrics include:

  • new codes for autoimmune disease, not elsewhere classified;
  • new and revised codes for influenza caused by avian flu and H1N1;
  • new codes in the other congenital musculoskeletal anomalies category;
  • new codes in Chapter 15: Conditions in the Perinatal Period section (including new codes for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy);
  • new and revised codes in Chapter 16: Symptoms, Signs and Ill-Defined Conditions;
  • new 5th digit for poisoning by antidepressants (969.01 – 969.09) and psychostimulants (969.71 – 969.79);
  • new and revised codes for other personal history and personal exposures presenting hazard to health;
  • new codes for health supervision;
  • new and revised codes for other family circumstances;
  • new codes for laboratory exams and special screenings;
  • 150 new Supplementary Classification of External Causes of Injury and Poisoning (E codes).

Below is a list of the more common codes in pediatrics that have been added or revised. The entire list can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site, www.cdc.gov/nchs/datawh/ftpserv/ftpicd9/ftpicd9.htm#guidelines.

Refer to the 2010 ICD-9 book for more information and the complete list of ICD-9 changes.

These new codes are effective (and must be accepted by third-party payers) on Oct. 1. In accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services no longer is allowing payers a grace period to implement the new and revised codes. Also, in order to be HIPAA compliant as a billing provider, you must obtain updated ICD-9 materials annually.
