Hundreds of changes to ICD-9 codes take effect Oct. 1
from the AAP Division of Health Care Finance and Quality Improvement
Oct. 1 brings about changes and updates for the InternationalClassification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9) coding. Thisyear, there are just over 310 new, 45 revised and 22 deletedcodes. Specific areas of note for pediatrics include:
new codes for autoimmune disease, not elsewhere classified;
new and revised codes for influenza caused by avian flu andH1N1;
new codes in the other congenital musculoskeletal anomaliescategory;
new codes in Chapter 15: Conditions in the PerinatalPeriodsection (including new codes for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy);
new and revised codes in Chapter 16: Symptoms, Signs and Ill-DefinedConditions;
new 5th digit for poisoning by antidepressants(969.01 –969.09) and psychostimulants (969.71 –969.79);
new and revised codes for other personal historyand personalexposures presenting hazard to health;
new codesfor health supervision;
new and revised codes for other familycircumstances;
new codes for laboratory exams and specialscreenings;
150 new Supplementary Classification of ExternalCauses of Injuryand Poisoning (E codes).

These new codes are effective (and must be accepted by third-partypayers) on Oct. 1. In accordance with the Health Insurance Portabilityand Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, the Centers for Medicare& Medicaid Services no longer is allowing payers a graceperiod to implement the new and revised codes. Also, in orderto be HIPAA compliant as a billing provider, you must obtainupdated ICD-9 materials annually.
