Pediatric Academic Societies to hold annual conference in Baltimore

Caitlin O. Smith
Editorial Intern

Figure 1
Some of the brightest minds in the academic pediatric world will convene in Baltimore from May 2-5 at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual conference.

Physician and non-physician members of several pediatric health care and academic communities will gather at the Baltimore Convention Center for four days of presentations, workshops, roundtable discussions and reviews of original science abstracts.

A collective effort of the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, the Academic Pediatric Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, the PAS conference coincides with a handful of pediatric symposia, giving attendees the opportunity to attend a variety of seminars. The PAS has collaborated with its partnering societies and organizations to offer additional symposia that "transcend and enhance the subspecialty areas."

A number of the co-sponsoring groups are international pediatric societies, a reflection of the increased emphasis on and prioritizing of international pediatric issues.

The main conference features a handful of "hot topics" every year. Topping this year’s agenda are seminars titled "Vaccine Advocacy in an Era of Controversy and Concern: From Science to Practice to Policy;" "Increasing Energy and Food Prices and Their Impact on Child Health and Development;" and "Advances in Global Child Health."

Attendees can choose from topics in 47 track sessions. Among the highlights of this year’s conference are:

Parent-Infant Feeding Interactions and the Early Life Origins of Obesity;

Statistical Methods for Vaccine Safety Evaluation;

The Role of Non-profit Organizations in Improving Pediatric Health Care Around the World; and

Information Technology: The Future of Patient Safety?

In addition, there are two special symposia: "The National Children’s Study: Moving into the Field" and "FOPO Task Force on Policy and Child Health Research Fund." For additional symposia information, see the conference Web site, which details seminars and identifies their respective target audiences.

Registration for the conference is open through the site, www.pas-meeting.org/2009Baltimore/. The deadline for late advance registration and housing reservations is April 1. Online/on-site registration will continue from April 2-16.
