Attitudes toward obesity Children develop cultural perceptions of attractiveness as early as age 5 years, reports an article in the February 1988 Pediatrics. Researchers at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario reviewed articles on children's attitudes toward thinness and fatness. They found that girls as young as 5 years old might be concerned about gaining weight. Television programs influence children's ideas of acceptable body images, the researchers report. Television delivers a message that those who are thin and beautiful are also happiest.
