Vaccine injury compensation law takes effect

As of Oct. 1, 1988, any child permanently injured by a vaccine will be able to file for compensation through the new federal compensation system.

Although the system was created last December by passage of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, the system only became operational now to allow the fund to collect enough money for prospective awards. Money that will be awarded to these children has been collected from surcharges levied on vaccine doses since Jan. 1, 1988.
