Infant Care Review Committees (ICRCs) are gaining widespread acceptance in advising parents and physicians on the care of seriously ill newborns, according to a national survey of hospitals with 1,500 annual births or a neonatal intensive care unit. About 52 percent of those hospitals surveyed have estaiblished ICRCs. Another 8 percent are forming such committees, the survey shows. Equally significant is the fact that many of the hospitals with no formally established ICRC also rely on collaborative decision-making. procedures by referring difficult cases to hospitals that do have committees, using an informal committee, or using some other multi-disciplinary review process.
