Phyicians have duty to help end 'sinister' abuse of children's rights

Violation of the fundamental human rights of children for political ends represents a particularly sinister form of child abuse. It may be difficult for many of us to believe that politically motivated cruelty to children goes on in the world today. However, an increasing number of sources are documenting gross abuses of children and their rights: disruption of families, lack of education, violence, arrest, detention, torture, psychological abuse, forced disappearance and murder. These unpleasant facts should be known by all pediatricians. Human rights abuses represent an enormous health problem for children of the world.
