Assembly-line arrests

Arrests were made easily and orderly at the APHA demonstration Sept. 30 in Las Vegas, even though there were hundreds of protesters and not more than 35 police officers and security guards. Marching five-abreast to the white line marking the boundary of the Nevada Nuclear Test Site, the demonstrators were confronted group-by-group by the county sheriff, who informed them that they would be charged with criminal trespass if they crossed the line. The center person in each five-person group then made a brief statement and stepped across the border. Once on federal property, the demonstrators were hand-cuffed and escorted by sheriff's police to three waiting buses. A total of 110 demonstrators, including seven pediatricians, were arrested for civil disobedience. Charges were later dropped.
