An Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee has recommended that the Public Health Service (PHS) discontinue a study on Reye Syndrome because preliminary results strongly support a link between aspirin and Reye Syndrome. The recommendation came in a February 1987 IOM report. At this point, PHS has not reached a decision on whether they are going to accept the recommendation. A PHS task force directed a pilot study on Reye Syndrome and medication in 1984 and collected data for a main study between January 1985 and May 1986.
