Animal rights: Time and alternatives

Aurora F. Alberti M.D., FAAP1

1 Rockville, Maryland

Regarding the front page article on animal research in the January 1987 AAP News, I suggest that some researchers are not open to the newer alternatives; that some of our members may not be aware of the amount of animal research which is unnecessary, redundant, indeed, even frivolous.

Imagine years of research in setting up an animal model of human macular disease in rabbits, until the researchers discover rabbits do not have maculars! Imagine $640,000 for "Experimental Ocular Histoplasmic Choroiditis in Primates" as an animal model of the disease in humans, when this disease is rare and usually has an excellent prognosis and is only presumed to be the result of histoplasmosis. Couldn't this money have been spent more usefully?
