Our words, our hearts

Joan E. Flender M.D., FAAP1

1 Dansville, New York

I have chosen to be a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics because it is an organization that seems genuinely concerned with the health of the children of the world. Certainly the fact that Dr. William Foege, the executive director of the Task Force for Child Survival, was chosen as the keynote speaker at the Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., confirms this belief.

On the other hand, I am quite distressed that our organization chose the U.S. Armed Forces Color Guard to open the Annual Meeting. It is a well known fact that much money that could be spent to improve the health of children in this country and around the world is instead spent, and usually wasted, on our military.
