Helen Brooke Tarussig, M.D., FAAP, died May 20 as the result of a car accident near her residence in Kennett Square, Pa. She was 87. Dr. Taussig, a professor emeritus of medicine at John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, was known as "the first lady of cardiology" for developing the blue-baby operation in 1944. She later devoted her career to research on congenital heart ailments and the effects of rheumatic fever. Recently, she had been commuting from her living quarters at Kennett Square retirement home to the University of Delaware, where she was studying heart malformations in birds.
