Getting elected often requires tenacity humor, war chest: Pediatricians find politics provides forum for advocacy efforts

Trading your stethoscope for a seat in the state-house may not be as preposterous as you think — after all, both pediatricians and politicians have an affinity for babies.

Add stamina, humor, a level head and a bankroll, and you might be ready to run for office, according to several pediatricians-turned-politicians.

"Experience with people that they have had over their practice years ... is enormously helpful in the world of politics," said James Pilliod, M.D., FAAP, who was re-elected to a second term in the New Hampshire House of Representatives last November.

Dr. Pilliod is one of several AAP members who made the leap from pediatrics to politics, and he encourages others to do the same.
