Most parents want to stay with their child when invasive procedures are being performed in the emergency department, according to a survey of 400 parents. Nearly 98 percent said they wanted to be present while blood was being drawn from their child; 94 percent when their child was getting stitches and 81 percent when their child was being intubated. In addition, 71 percent wanted to be present during a resuscitation if their child was unconscious. The figure increased to 83 percent if the child were likely to die. Parents completed the survey while waiting in a hospital emergency department. The questionnaire included five scenarios with an increasing level of procedural invasiveness (venipuncture, laceration repair, lumbar puncture, oral endotracheal intubation and major resuscitation).
