The Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has proposed that, beginning Jan. 1, 2000, all four doses of childhood polio vaccine should be from inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). Members of the Academy participated in the ACIP discussion; the recommendation was made June 17. According to the proposal, oral polio vaccine (OPV) would be acceptable only for special circumstances, such as to control outbreaks, for imminent travel to polio-endemic countries and if parents refuse the number of injections needed at the time of the third and fourth doses.
