Using proper codes can improve payment for mental health services

Reimbursement for mental health services (or the lack thereof) is a perennial topic of discussion among pediatricians who care for adolescents. The Adolescent Health Update Editorial Board recognized a need to address reimbursement in conjunction with its two-part series on parent/ adolescent communication published in February and July 1999. For that purpose, the editors invited fellow board member Peter Rappo M.D., FAAP, immediate past chair of the AAP Committee on Practice and Ambulatory Medicine, to address efforts to obtain appropriate reimbursement for mental health services by pediatricians, and the prognosis for their success.
