The term "complementary and alternative medicine" covers a spectrum of healing philosophies, approaches and therapies not widely taught in U.S. medical schools, used in hospitals or reimbursed by medical insurance companies, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), one of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.
