Approximately 70 percent of the Kosovar refugees in Albania are under 15 years old and face lifelong medical and psychological problems unless preventive treatment is forthcoming, reported an AAP member after a medical fact-finding mission to a refugee camp. "Once again, this complex humanitarian emergency is harming children most of all," said Karen Olness, M.D., FAAP, of Cleveland, program chair of the AAP Section on International Child Health and a member of the Standing Committee of the International Pediatric Association (IPA). A veteran of nearly 40 years in international child health work, she organizes rapid response teams for disaster relief.
