A pediatrician cares for an average of 1,546 patients, who primarily are under age 12, according to a study from Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS), the national practice-based research network of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The study included 89 practices in 31 states. Nearly 14 percent were solo practices; 21.3 percent had two or three practitioners; and 65.2 percent were large group practices. The 373 PROS practitioners had 529,513 active patients (children seen at least once during the past two years). The number of patients per practitioner was significantly higher in less-populated areas and in solo practices.
