The prevalence of binge drinking among pregnant women increased from 0.7 percent in 1991 to 2.9 percent in 1995, according to a survey of U.S. women ages 18 to 44. Researchers analyzed data collected by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a telephone survey of 4,611 pregnant women and 99,312 non-pregnant women in 46 states. Results showed: 13.7 percent of pregnant women and 52.8 percent of nonpregnant women said they drank alcohol in the month before the survey; 1.9 percent of pregnant women and 11.6 percent of nonpregnant women reported consuming five or more drinks per occasion (binge drinking) during the study period;
