Match Day: 99% of pediatrics slots filled

Jeffrey Stoddard M.D., FAAP

Interest in pediatrics remains strong, according to this year's results from the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).

On March 18, 2,254 first-year pediatrics positions were offered in the match along with 432 internal medicine-pediatrics positions. Of these, 2,223 of the pediatrics positions (99 percent) and 382 of the medicine-pediatrics positions (88 percent) filled through the match.

"In general, pediatrics did very well in the sense that the vast majority of positions available were filled through the match," said Robert J. Nolan, M.D., president of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors. "When the fill rate is 98.6 percent, that really is quite impressive and consistent with the continued popularity of pediatrics as a career choice for medical school students."
