FDA approves vaccine to prevent Lyme disease

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first vaccine for prevention of Lyme disease.

Called LYMErix (SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals), the vaccine is licensed for administration in a three-dose series given over the course of a year for persons 15 to 70 years of age. Data concerning the vaccine's safety and efficacy in children younger than 15 years are not available, and the FDA did not approve LYMErix for use in this age group.

LYMErix's major side effects are soreness and swelling at the injection site and occasional muscle and joint pain.
