Standardized procedures used to save babies who struggle to breathe became part of pediatric history Nov. 25 at a Jacksonville, Fla., hospital when the 1 millionth person completed training or retraining in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). As many as 80 percent of the 30,000 babies in this country weighing less than 1,500 g require some form of resuscitation. As recently as the mid-1970s, however, resuscitation experts and Consumer Products, introduced the NRP in South Africa and Argentina. In August, Jeffrey Perlman, M.B., Ch.B., FAAP, a member of the NRP steering committee, was director for five NRP courses in South Africa, his birthplace. Seven AAP members served as volunteer faculty for the courses, which were planned in coordination with volunteer physicians from the South African Pediatric Association.
