Infants with fussy/demanding temperaments were more likely to have psychiatric symptoms in adolescence, according to a 15-year study of 100 Helsinki children born in 1975-76. However, demanding children whose families received counseling were protected from developing symptoms. Researchers created an index of factors that may harm an infant's mental development. A psychiatric nurse evaluated all families and collected information on risk factors, which fell under three main headings: family relationships, family health and family socioeconomic status. Families then were classified as low-risk or high-risk.
