AAP News Vol. 15 No. 12 December 1999, p. 21 © 1999 American Academy of Pediatrics
The rhesus rotavirus tetravalent vaccine (RRV-TV or RotaShield), approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 1998 and incorporated into the 1999 routine immunization schedule, is no longer recommended for use because of the association of this vaccine with intussusception. Based on preliminary data, the Academy and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in July recommended suspension of the use of this vaccine, and the product was with-drawn voluntarily from the market in October. Both the Academy and the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also have with-drawn their previously published statement supporting use of this vaccine in infants. This action was made following a logical progression of studies.
