The treatment of diabetes mellitus in children and youth has intensified over the past few years as a result of the findings of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial reported in 1993 (New England Journal of Medicine. 329: 977-986, 1993). This landmark study showed that controlling blood glucose levels markedly lessens the complications of diabetes. Consequently, children with diabetes are performing more blood glucose tests and taking more insulin injections.
