Ask Jon Richard Almquist, M.D., FAAP, why he decided to become a pediatrician, and he describes the moment he fell in love with pediatric medicine. "I was 19 years old and working that summer as a volunteer at the University of Washington Medical Center," said the 59-year-old Dr. Almquist, who last spring was elected to the AAP Board of Directors from District VIII. "As luck would have it, I got assigned one afternoon to work with a pediatrician-in-training who had a real gift for treating kids. Dr. (John) Acey was amazing. He had cards stuffed in his pockets, and he was doing tricks. He was pulling coins out of their ears and he had them all laughing.
