Medem.com promises to empower physicians, consumers

Carla Kemp

It's simple — only five letters. And it's a palindrome.

It's Medem — the new name of the consumer Web site the Academy created with six other medical societies representing more than two-thirds of the nation's physicians.

The site was introduced to AAP members as MyHealthSource, but that name could not be used due to trademark issues, according to AAP Executive Director Joe M. Sanders Jr., M.D., FAAP.

After an exhaustive search, medem.com was chosen and announced at a press conference in New York.

It's not the snappiest name out there, Dr. Sanders admits. But he adds: "Whoever heard of Yahoo? Now it's a household name. Your name is what you make it."
