Virginia Apgar Award

Kurt Benirschke, M.D., at right, accepts the Virginia Apgar Award from Don Cook, M.D., AAP vice president, at the 1998 AAP Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Dr. Benirschke was honored by the AAP Section on Perinatal Pediatrics for his contributions to the knowledge of human and nonhuman reproductive biology.

The country's pre-eminent placental and perinatal pathologist, Dr. Benirschke has championed examination of the placenta as a window backward to prenatal experience. His textbook, The Pathology of the Human Placenta, is the definitive resource for pathologists, obstetricians and neonatologists worldwide.
