Infant homicide risk factors

Carla Kemp

Infants who were the second or subsequent child of a mother younger than 19 years of age were more likely to be homicide victims than first-borns whose mothers were at least 25 years old, according to an analysis of U.S. birth and death records.

Researchers linked birth certificates from all 34,895,000 births between 1983 and 1991 to death certificates completed during the same time frame. They identified 2,776 homicides during infants' first year of life, half of which occurred by the fourth month.
