AAP News writing, redesign honored

AAP News staff members again were winners of APEX awards for their contributions to the magazine. Anne Hegland, editor, and Michael Hayes, art director, were honored in the 10th annual Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX) competition.

Hegland received an APEX '98 Award of Excellence in news writing for her October 1997 article titled "Tobacco foes." It featured side-by-side interviews with C. Everett Koop, M.D., FAAP, former U.S. Surgeon General, and David A. Kessler, M.D., FAAP, former Food and Drug Administration commissioner. Both are high-profile activists in the anti-tobacco movement.

Hayes was honored with an APEX '98 Award of Excellence in the "best redesign" category. His six-month redesign project culminated with the January 1998 debut of an updated, reader-friendly look for AAP News.
