Congressional spouse luncheon

Marjorie Tharp

The Academy co-sponsored a congressional spouse luncheon July 21 on Capitol Hill with the Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness (CFACA). The purpose of the event was to heighten awareness and understanding of pediatric issues by policymakers and their families. Linda Bachus, wife of Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) and CFACA executive director, introduced a CD-ROM game about nutrition titled "Body Fun" aimed at 8- to 12-year-olds. AAP Board member Carden Johnston, M.D., made a presentation called "Pediatricians as Partners — How to Promote Healthy Lifestyles for Young People in Your Community," focusing on hepatitis B, folic acid, sun-screens and smoking. Plans are under way to connect pediatricians and congressional families at the local level. The photo shows Dr. Johnston (left), meeting Carolina Reyes (center), wife of Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas), and Carolyn Wolf, wife of Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.).
