Initially, more than 150,000 children had their benefits cut following the federal government's implementation of new Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program regulations in February 1997. A year and a half later, the Senate Subcommittee on Social Security and Family Policy is reviewing how the Social Security Administration is handling the implementation. Sen. John Chafee (R-R.I.), subcommittee chair, requested the American Academy of Pediatrics' input during a July 7 hearing. "The reasons of how and why we got to this point are less important to review than what the impact is of those changes and what Congress and the administration need to be considering for children with disabilities from this point forward," James Perrin, M.D., FAAP, testified.
