The Academy and other medical organizations are urging the American Medical Association (AMA) to reconsider its plan to implement a program to accredit and verify the credentials of physicians. Of concern is the integrity of a revenue-generating program that is overseen and managed by a single medical organization. Likening the venture to the "fox guarding the hen house," AAP Executive Director Joe M. Sanders Jr., M.D., stated "We don't think that any single medical group has the public credibility (to accredit) without a conflict of interest, either real or perceived, because it's a membership organization." For example, the AMA has said it will offer a reduced fee schedule for accreditation services to its members, Dr. Sanders noted.
