Until more data become available, individual risk should be the basis for health department and physician decisions on chemoprophylaxis for household contacts of patients with invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) infection, advised a national work group that included AAP representatives. The Working Group on Prevention of Invasive GAS Infections was convened in October 1995 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In reviewing and summarizing data on GAS transmission and risk factors, the work group's goal was to gauge how effective antimicrobial prophylaxis would be in preventing infection of household contacts of invasive GAS patients.
