When the Supreme Court on June 27 struck down the Brady law provision requiring a background check before an individual purchases a handgun, it did not totally undermine the benefits of the law, since the five-day waiting period was not affected. Under the AAP-backed Brady law, every potential handgun purchaser must go through a five-day waiting period and a background check. The law charged state and local law enforcement officials with conducting the background checks, struck down by the Supreme Court as an infringement on states' rights.
