Academy agrees to television ratings deal

Marjorie Tharp

The Academy joined eight other advocacy organizations in reaching agreement with the television industry June 10 to modify the current age-based ratings system by indicating whether a show contains violence, sex, coarse language or suggestive dialogue.

Viewers will begin seeing the modified system in action by Oct. 1, when the current TV-PG, TV-14 and TV-MA ratings categories will be accompanied, where appropriate, with a V for violence, S for sexual situations, L for language or D for dialogue. For example, a police drama may be rated TV-14 VL, indicating intense violence and strong, coarse language.
