Eighty percent of obese adolescents will go on to be obese adults, and though few comprehensive treatment centers specialize in adolescent obesity, clinicians can develop such programs within their practice settings, a Philadelphia review stated. Pediatricians should consider obesity a chronic disease requiring long-term treatment, researchers said. Treatment should include behavior modification, nutritional counseling, exercise and parental participation to address both the obesity and associated problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, sleep disorders and psychological stress.
