National campaign highlights breastfeeding

To underscore the benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies, Aug. 1 to Aug. 7 has been proclaimed WIC National Breastfeeding Week by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman.

At the same time, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children (WIC) will launch its National Breastfeeding Promotion Campaign. As a member of the Breastfeeding Promotion Consortium, the Academy has worked with the USDA in the campaign's development.

The project's goals are to increase initiation and duration of breastfeeding, and to increase the number of referrals to WIC for breastfeeding support, all while increasing the general acceptance of breastfeeding in the United States.
