Dear Colleagues: Have you noticed, as I have, the weight carried by the word children, and how frequently it is used to attract attention or to reap material gain? Let me explain. Consider recent headlines, like: "FTC Charles Joe Camel Is Aimed at Children." The Federal Trade Commission took up this fight because the potential victims here are children. Helping children can lead to high approval ratings. The media fervently gave high profile to the story because the word children draws readers and viewers. That coverage can lead to increased newspaper sales and improved TV ratings.
