The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing a limit on the amount of ephedrine alkaloids put in dietary supplements because of associated health risks. The proposal calls for warnings on labels, but would not ban dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids. Ephedrine alkaloids, sold primarily for weight loss, increased energy and body building, are amphetamine-like compounds with stimulant effects on the nervous system and heart. More than 800 reports of adverse effects associated with the use of these products have been reported.
