Children were hit by dramatic losses in health insurance coverage between 1987 and 1993, according a study by the AAP Division of Health Policy Research. The division's state-level analysis of children's health insurance coverage during that period showed: the number of uninsured U.S. children grew by 1 million; the number of U.S. children covered by conventional health insurance (employer-based or private) dropped significantly in 75 percent of states; and the number of Medicaid-covered children rose significantly in 80 percent of states. The Academy conducted the study to provide hard data for policy makers and child health advocates debating Medicaid restructuring amid the concurrent decline in employer-based dependent health insurance coverage.
