The day when pediatricians can prescribe medicine to a patient knowing exactly the drug's safety, efficacy and dosage may come sooner rather than later with the introduction of the Better Pharmaceuticals for Children Act. The bill (S.713) would grant six months of market exclusivity for drugs that have undergone pediatric studies at the request of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). "We put labels on the food they eat and the television they watch," said Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.), who sponsored the bill with Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio). "We shouldn't be guessing about the medicine we give them."
