Although the combination of dental sealants and fluoride can prevent almost all tooth decay in children, relatively few patients have sealants applied, and those at greatest risk are least likely to receive these treatments, a nationwide study showed. More than half of 6- to 8-year-olds and two-thirds of 15-year-olds have unfilled cavities or fillings, researchers stated. Studies show up to 96 percent of sealants are completely retained after one year, and longer studies indicate up to 57 percent retainment 10 years after a single application.
