Otitis media, vitamin A deficiency

Stefanie Dell' Aringa

Despite the suggestion that vitamin A deficiency is a precursor to otitis media, no correlation was found between the two, according to a report from the Mariana Islands.

Researchers measured serum retinol concentrations in 200 children, ages 3 to 5 years, living in Saipan, and followed them for 12 months for diagnosed otitis media episodes.

Caretakers were questioned about vitamin A and otitis media risk factors, such as child care center attendance, cigarette smoking in the household and occurrence of symptoms of respiratory infections within the previous two weeks.
