Adolescent girls do not always use prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medication effectively to manage menstrual pain, according to a Nova Scotia study. Researchers questioned 291 girls, ages 14 to 21, about menstrual discomfort and pain medication used during their last three cycles. Responses revealed 93 percent of subjects experienced some degree of pain during at least one of their last three cycles; 70 percent reported using OTC medication (popular choices were acetaminophen and aspirin); and 18 percent reported using prescription medication, most frequently naproxen sodium and hormone pills.
