Looking back 50 years at a journal, and a profession

If reviewing the past helps in understanding the present and charting the future, then 1998 holds great promise for the official journal of the Academy, Pediatrics, which in January will begin celebrating its 50th anniversary.

"I don't think many people realize how far pediatrics has risen," said Jeff Baker, M.D., FAAP, a pediatrician with a master's degree in history. For an article to be published in a July anniversary supplement, Dr. Baker is reviewing commentaries and letters to the editor, to document trends in the journal.
