Physician education, supply addressed in budget act

In addition to earmarking $24 billion for children's health insurance, the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 includes provisions of special interest to pediatricians.

Under the budget agreement, Medicare reimbursement for combined residency programs is now allowed for the full duration of training, if both disciplines are in primary care, such as internal medicine and pediatrics. These combined programs run concurrently for a longer period of time than required for certification in either program, but shorter than required if the programs are taken sequentially.
