Those who work in the maternal and child health field have long known that cigarette smoking is detrimental to the health of mothers and babies. Smoking during pregnancy has been associated with pregnancy complications ranging from ectopic pregnancy and increased risk of miscarriage to low birth weight and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Recent research is helping open our eyes to just how serious smoking by pregnant and parenting women can be. It also has underscored the importance of smoking cessation and reduction programs designed specifically for pregnant women.
