Children hospitalized for asthma recover better in smoke-free homes than in homes where parents smoke tobacco, a Seattle study reported. Researchers monitored 22 post-hospitalized acute asthmatic children, ages 2 to 13 years. Half recovered in households with nonsmokers, while the other half returned to homes with at least one smoker. Results of the four-week study showed children recovering in homes with smokers had a significantly greater number of symptomatic days than those recovering in smoke-free environments.
