Children with blunt trauma have better outcomes at designated pediatric trauma centers than at a major adult trauma centers "with pediatric commitment." Researchers compared national norms with outcomes of 1,797 children, up to age 15, admitted to a designated pediatric trauma center in Chicago between 1987 and 1993, separating data for blunt and penetrating injury. Results showed: Children 10 and younger with blunt injury had better outcomes at a pediatric trauma center; Older children and those with penetrating injuries had the same outcomes at each center; and Successful non-operative treatment of liver and spleen injuries is more likely at a pediatric trauma center.
